- BAAWAJA EXPEDITIONS
You will have the opportunity to experience the lifestyle of one of the largest native communities in the Peruvian Amazon.
Baawaja Expeditions is a private company owned by the Native Community of Infierno in Tambopata Puerto Maldonado, which was founded at the end of 2008 with the mission to do ecotourism, research and conservation related activities through Tambopata Tours.
Brief History of the Native Community of Infierno
The Infierno Native Community is currently made up of ethnic populations and differentiated indigenous groups, among which we must name the indigenous population of the Ese Eja ethnic group of Peru, settlers of Andean origin, mestizos and riverine people, who have had different patterns of occupation in the area.
When talking about the formation and settlement of each of the ethnic groups of the native community, two historical processes must be recognized: first, the creation of the hamlet of Infierno and second, the creation of the native community and its ethnic groups.
The Community of Infierno in Madre de Dios – Puerto Maldonado
Geographically, the Infierno Community is located in the city of Puerto Maldonado, province of Tambopata, in southeastern Peru; precisely between the banks of the Tambopata River (in the local native language Ese Eja, known as Baawaja River).
The community has a territorial extension of 9,701 hectares, which have been recognized by the Peruvian state. In order to enter the Infierno Native Community, you have to travel 18 km (11 miles) approximately 45 minutes by bus from the city of Puerto Maldonado.
There is also the option of arriving by river, starting from the city of Puerto Maldonado, whose route is along the Tambopata River, with a duration of 1 hour and a half by boat.
To visit the community in its splendor, you can take one of our tours and stay in an Eco Lodge or one of the most comfortable Bungalows or Tourist Hostels that Baawaja Expeditions offers. Tambopata awaits you!
